Indonesia in Shadow and Light
Outline: This book introduces North Americans to a distant island country of many ancient and complex cultures caught up in a headlong dash into the modern world economy. A sweeping survey chapter presents the history of the Indies, moving through patches of shadow and light, from the days of flourishing kingdoms on Java and Bali, through three centuries as a Dutch colony, to independence under two autocratic presidents. Changing economic systems and successive imported religions, including Christianity, are noted. Case studies, many provided of Indonesians, examine various aspets of life in Indonesia today. Readers meet Simi, a village girl who supports her family by working in a foreign-owned sport shoe factory, and Hety, a teacher who sacrifices her health and career to keep her marriage. They visit a mountain village threatened by government-sponsored "development," learn about a Protestant congregation in a tribal society, and encounter the conflict over self-determination in East Timor. Each study is introduced by the author, who was a missionary in Indonesia for many years. It includes in-depth analysis and suggestions for action. The concluding chapter notes Indonesian achievements and problems and relates them to parallel problems in North America. There is a list of slected resources including books, electronic media, and associations that provide further information or opportunities for study or service. The book is illustrated with photographs and with drawings of Indonesian fabric and carving.
