Indonesian Trade and Society : Essays in Asian Social and Economic History by J.C. van Leur
Outline: In a series of studies written during the short period from 1934 until his death in 1942, Dr van Leur, taking issue with the Dutch 'colonial historians' attempted to break loose from the Europe-centred view dominating Western historical writing on Asia. Applying Max Weber's methodology of social and economic history to southeast Asia, a region not treated by Weber, he was able in his dissertation on early Asian trade and his later, shorter writings to cast much new light on the Hinduization and the Islamization of Indonesia, and a number of other questions of southeast Asian history. Largely disregarded as a scholar during his lifetime, Van Leur has since the war been recognized by a growing number of social scientists as having done pioneer work. Up to now, however, that number has necessarily been restricted by the fact that Van Leur's work was available only to persons reading Dutch. In this volume, for the first time, all his major writings have been brought together and published in English translation.
