Overview : This book is designed as an introduction to the visual arts: painting, drawing and sculpture. It provides a comprehensive survey, in ten volumes, of one of the most creative aspects of human effort, especially organized for the reader who does not have an exetensive knowledge of the history of art. Textual material prepared by experts in each school of art presents a detailed background of information. But, since art must be seen to be understood and appreciated, the essence of each volume lies in the color plates and the large number of black-and-white illustrations. The first volume discusses the origins of the visual arts in the western world. This book has been divided into six chapters: Imperial Roman Art Early Christian Art; The Eastern Roman Empire; Western Europe to the Eleventh Century; Romanesque Art; and Gothic Art. This volume contains numerous black and white reproductions as well as over eighty in full color. An extensive index is also included.
