Book of Art, The : Volume 6 British and North American Art to 1900
Overview : This book is designed as an introduction to the visual arts: painting, drawing and sculpture. It provides a comprehensive survey, in ten volumes, of one of the most creative aspects of human effort, especially organized for the reader who does not have an exetensive knowledge of the history of art. Textual material prepared by experts in each school of art presents a detailed background of information. But, since art must be seen to be understood and appreciated, the essence of each volume lies in the color plates and the large number of black-and-white illustrations. The following five volumes are devoted to national schools of painting, extending roughly from the early Renaissance up to the mid-19 century. This volume contains more than ninety biographies. Throughout the volume are black and white reproductions as well as as over seventy-five in full color. An extensive index is also included.
