Journey of Modern Theology : From Reconstruction to Deconstruction
Overview: In this major revision and expansion of the classic 20th-Century Theology (1992), coauthored with Stanly J. Grenz, the author guides us on the epic journey of modern theology. With an irenic and ecumenical spirit, the author uncovers the origins of modern theological movements, explores key ideas and texts, and reflects on their ongoing relevance for the church. Beginning with the liberal "reconstruction" of theology that originated with Schleiermacher and concluding with the post-modern "deconstruction" that continues today, this book traces the conflict between theologies that either reject or accommodate to the modern context. Along the way, the author highlights certain theologians who chart a positive way forward, neither ignoring the significance of modernity nor capitulating to it. This book is vintage the author: eminently readable, panoramic in scope, at once original and balanced, and marked throughout by a passionate concern for the church's faithfulness to the gospel of Jesus Christ. This will no doubt become another standard text in historical theology.
