Oracles of God, The
Overview: John Calvin was a man of manysided greatness and it is not surprising that when stress is laid on his work as a theologian and architect of Christian polity tht his homelier qualities as pastor and preacher are overlooked. The author has done good service, in recovering for the English reader, the picture of Calvin at work on sermon preparation and sermon delivery. Here, as in other aspects of his work, Calvin's creative genius had profound effects on subsequent developments far beyond the "reformed" tradition which honours his name. This introduction to the preaching of John Calvin is based on a thorough review of Calvin's extant sermons and the author's careful catalogue of these sermons, and criticism of existing catalogues, is a useful contribution in the field of historical scholarship. But the book has also a wider purpose. The study of Calvin's method and style in preaching has direct relevance to the task of the modern preacher and the author's concluding chapter contains a strong plea for a recovery of the type of expository sermon which is so seldom heard in Christian pulpits to-day.
