Hegel to Existentialism, From
Outline: Hegel and existensialism form two poles of a contemporary dialogue, according to Robert C. Solomon: Hegel's global perspective and pursuit of "the absolute" balance of the enthusiastic individualism of existentialism. The dialectic between these two philosophical perspectives, whose vicissitudes have come to define not only continental philosophy but much of life in Europe and America, lie at the heart of this book. This book brings together a dozen of the author's best-known published articles focusing on key issues in the writings of major continental philosophers, including Hegel, Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, Husserl, Freud, Sartre, and Camus. Shedding light on the thought and interrelations of these writers, the collection also develops a set of provocative and forcefully-argued original theses, and encapsulates some of the central ideas of the author's most important books. Throughout these essays, the author offers a synthetic approach to philosophy, breaking down artificial barriers such as those between Anglo-American and continental philosophy and between "analytic" and "phenomenological" techniques. His aim is to present one picture of "rapproachement," bringing together the methods of analysis and phenomenology, the cautious and much qualified claims of the analysts and the ambitious visions of the Europeans. Rather than a unified body of techniques or doctrines, philosophy emerges as a multi-dimensional tradition and practice as broad and varied as Western culture itself.
