Harper's Bible Pronunciation Guide : The preferred pronunciations for over 7,000 names and other words in the Bible
Outline: The most authoritative, accessible guide of its kind, this book can be used with any major English Bible translation. It will be welcomed by preachers of all denominations, teachers, lay readers, public speakers, and others who must properly pronounce biblical words and phrases. Divided into two sections: "Biblical Terms" (both proper and common names) and "Non-biblical Terms," this definitive work provides clear guidance for pronouncing every proper name in the English Bible (including the Apocrypha). It also covers other biblical terms that are not generally included in most bible dictionaries (such as festivals, weights, coins, religious objects), and technical terms important for biblical study that do not actually appear in the Bible (for example, eschatology, hermeneutics). While it is true that proper pronunciation is determined by current usage, such usage is often difficult if not imposible to determine. For some biblical terms, two or more different pronunciations are commonly used (ab'uh and ab'buh for "Abba"). At times, a discrepancy exists between pronunciations used by scholars and those found in popular usage (bah'al and bay'uhl for "Baal"). Because many biblical names are rarely spoken, no definite pronunciation for them exists. Further complications ensure because many biblical terms in their current English forms were transformed as they passed through several languages (such as Greek and Latin) which left the marks of their own distinctive patterns of pronunciation. It is thus impossible for many users of the Bible to determine what is the "correct" pronunciation of biblical terms, especially names from the Old Testament. In order to overcome those difficulties and move toward a consistent standard of biblical pronunciation, the editors have applied the following principles:
- Current usage is followed when it is clear and consistent.
- Where two or more different pronunciations are commonly used, the pronunciation given is the one that is, in the judgment of the editors, most consistent with the pronunciation of other terms with similar English spellings.
- Where scholarly and popular pronunciations differ, the popular pronunciations are followed.
- Pronunciations that come easily to the English speaker are preferred over those more unfamiliar.
- And where biblical names are used as personal names today, the contemporary pronunciations are given, unless a different biblical pronunciation is well established.
