Commentary
Cambridge Bible Commentary on the New English Bible, The : The Books of Ruth, Esther, Ecclesiastes, The Song of Songs, Lamentations
Outline: The five Old Testament books dealt with this volume of the Commentary occupied a special place in Hebrew tradition as selected readings for major festivals and were accordingly brought together in Hebrew manuscripts to form a group of five scrolls. The books of The Five Scrolls vary greatly: debate about their holiness and authority is recorded from the second century A.D. onwards, and they pose many problems of interpretation today. The author provides an introduction to the scrolls as a whole and then prefaces the five sections of N.E.B. text and commentary (interwoven in the style of series) with discussion of such topics as the books' form, interpretations, textual problems and literary characteristics; the historical and cultural background at the time of composition; and their place in Judaism and Christianity. At the end of each section the author summarizes the message of the book. Suggestions are made for further reading.
