Joshua, Judges and Ruth for Everyone
Outline: The dramatic accounts in the books of Joshua, Judges and Ruth takes us from the cusp of Israel's entering the Promised Land to the eve of founding of its monarchy. The high adventure (Joshua), horror (Judges) and love (Ruth) in these three books illustrate the spectrum of Israel's relationship with God: faithfulness and victory; sin and redemption; and loyalty and blessing. Under Joshua's devout leadership, an obedient Israel enters Canaan to take its inheritance from - and carry out God's judgement upon - the wicked inhabitants. In the generations after Joshua, Israel succumbs to the evil practices of the nations it failed to drive out. Yet God remains faithful. He raises up flawed individuals - the judges - to rescue the Children of Israel from their enemies. But, despite an epidemic of faithlessness during this dark and violent age, the book of Ruth shows that there are still those who exhibit God's loyalty, compassion and love - the ultimate product of which will be the great king David, the ancestor of Jesus. And so, God's plan of salvation continues to develop.... Using personal anecdote, a witty and lively style, and drawing on his considerable theological knowledge, the author takes us deep into the unfolding story of the Old Testament. And, as he guides us in our understanding of these time-honoured words and the ancient world they describe, he help us to apply what we read to our lives.
