Commentary
1 and 2 Kings for Everyone
Outline: Good kings and bad kings, good faith and bad faith - these are the themes of 1 and 2 Kings. Here, we begin with the wealth-drenched rule of wise King Solomon and end with the consequences of his successors' folly. We read of how Solomon's kingdom - so hard won by his father David - is divided, and of how the fates of northern Israel and southern Judah was wedded to the goodness or wickedness of their kings. Again and again, these rulers expose Israel and Judah to judgement by failing to reflect God's holiness and to ensure that he alone is worshipped. Yet God, ever loving, raises up those who are good from among David's descendants and send prophets to proclaim the benefits of faithfulness to God and warn of the dire consequences that unfaithfulness will bring. Using personal anecdote, a witty and lively style, and drawing on his considerable theological knowledge, the author takes us deep into the unfolding story of the Old Testament. And, as he guides us in our understanding of these time-honoured words and the ancient world they describe, he helps us to apply what we read to our lives.
