Possessed By God: A New Testament Theology of Sanctification and Holiness
Overview: The new series addresses key issues in the discipline of biblical theology. Each of the contributions to this series focuses on one or more of three areas: the nature and status of biblical theology, the exposition of the structure or thought of a particular biblical writer or book, and the delineation of a biblical theme across all or part of the Bible. Scholarly yet uncluttered with untransliterated Greek and Hebrew, these volumes avoid technical jargon, interact with the best of current literature, and - above all - provide clear and creative insights that help thinking Christians better understand the Bible. In this book, the inaugural volume of the New Studies in Biblical Theology series, the author challenges the common assumption that the New Testament views sanctification as primarily a process. He argues instead that its emphasis falls upon sanctification as a definitive event, "God's way of taking possession of us in Christ, setting us apart to belong to him and to fulfil his purpose for us." Simply to identify sanctification with growth in holiness, the author contends, obscures the emphasis and balance of New Testament teaching and creates unrealistic expectations. Throughout this engaging study, the author builds his case on careful exegesis of the relevant New Testament passages. At the same time he shows the pastoral strength of his fundings, demonstrating that positional sanctification offers the greatest incentive for godly living and growth.
