Religious Pluralism and Religious Freedom : Religions, Society and the State in Dialogue : Contributions to the Austrian-Indonesian Dialogue
Outline: In an environment of increasing religious pluralism, the State's responsibility for the protection of equal religious freedom for all is gaining in importance. Yet the more religion tends to assert a public role, the more the State must be able to count on the recognition by religions themselves of religious pluralism and religious freedom also for others. This requires an opening of religions not only towards each other, but also towards modernity and its paradigms of legitimacy. Only then can religions assume their share in answering the growing need for dialogue that engages not only religious communities but also civil society at large, and the State. This volume comprises papers, panel statements, and lectures presented and discussed on the occasion of the 2nd Indonesian-Austrian Dialogue Symposium held in Yogyakarta on 22-24 September 2010 as well as during the 3rd Austrian-Indonesian Dialogue Symposium held in Vienna and Salzburg on 6-11 June 2011. The various issues dealt with in this volume reflect the multiple dimensions in which religion can and indeed does acquire heightened significance of today's world. What emerges from all this is the growing need for dialogue that engages not only religious communities but also civil society and democratic public at large, as well as political actors.
