Calvin's Ecclesiastical Advice
Outline: In this collection of forty-six letters and writings of John Calvin, newly translated into English, the reformer gives advice to individuals and groups about theology, ethics, worship, politics, economics, and church practices. Topics discussed include dogmatics and polemics, changes (and the need for changes) in religion, the worship of images, ecclesiastical discipline, marriage, and justice. Specific subjects addressed include sin and redemption; emigrating because of religion; the lawfulness of making images to represent God; the disorderlines of certain ministers; whether a man may marry his dead brother's widow; and usury. Each writing is introduced by an identification of the receiver of the advice and explanation of the subjet matter itself. The volume is useful for understanding Calvin's theology and its continuing practical importance.
