Filipino Spirit-World : A Challenge to the Church

Outline: A "conspiracy of silence" exists regarding certain religious practices of Filipinos. The Church has ignored a spirit-world belief system held by most of its members. As a result, Filipinos take their unmet spiritual needs to the out-of-church-spirit-world practitioners (faith healers, diviners, etc.). Mr. Henry attempts to awaken the church. Highlighting elements of "animism" in the Filipino worldview and comparing it with Western worldview, he expounds the development of folk christianity in the Philippines; the theological foundation of the spirit-world; the angelic and demonic spirit-world and the discernment of supernatural powers. He challenges the church to provide not only for the ultimate concerns (getting saved and going to heaven) but also for our daily spiritual needs, amd to proclaim the believers' power against the demonic spirit-world. He exhorts Christians, especially leaders, to include the spirit-world in the scope of their doctrine, and to provide alternatives to meet the everyday now ministered to by out-of-church practitioners.
