Chronicle of Indonesian Higher Education, A : The first half century, 1920-1970
Outline: The Chronicle is a unique publication - the only book length history of Indonesia's higher learning system available in any language. The growth of public and private institutions is depicted against a backdrop of six socio-political periods - Dutch colonial times, Japanese military occupation, four years of Revolution, nearly a decade of Parliamentary Democracy, the era of Guided Democracy, and the first years of the New Order. Woven through the narrative are descriptions of:
- When, where, why, and how the nation's most prominent institutions evolved.
- Interactions between universities and the nation's political establishment, including the role of student organizations during national crises.
- The growth of student enrolments and facilities in individual schools and for the nation as a whole.
- Persistent problems faced by the higher education system, and solutions adopted to solve these problems.
