Common Catechism, The : A Book of Christian Faith : A Crossroad Book
Outline: This book presents the first collaboration of Catholic and Protestant theologians on a comprehensive statement of religious faith in the more than four hundred and fifty years since the separation of the churches. Written by an international team of 40 Protestant and Roman Catholic theologians, it is the most important expression in our day of the growing determination of Christians the world over to come together to witness to the truth. The Common Catechism is an ecumenical work, drawing not only on the resources of many nations but also on all the major Western Christian traditions. It will be a source of enlightenment and encouragement to every individual Christian. Of special interest to all is the way in which The Common Catechism complements and carries foward the ecumenical endeavor begun in the 1960's with the publication of a New Catechism, more generally known as the "Dutch Catechism". The Common Catechism offers both a more concise presentation of Christian faith and a more explicity theological point of departure. Where the "Dutch Catecnism" began with the primary teachings of Christian revelation, The Common Catechism begins with the fundamental questions of human existence and then goes on to relate them to man's religious experiences and beliefs. The two works thus constitute a complete library of contemporary religious thought. Avoiding specialized theological terminology, The Common Catechism offers the general reader new and broad perspectives on today's theological thinking. It makes clearer and more vital than ever before the community which unites Christians of different churches. It will stir men and women everywhere to seek a joint testimony of faith in their Christian life - to provide a coherent and responsible statement of belief not only for themselves but to a world which, threatened by disaster, may look to Christians for an account of the faith that sustains them.
