Asian Voices in Christian Theology
Outline: For centuries Christian theology has suffered from myopia, focusing intently on Western history and culture but scarcely discerning the realities of Asia, Africa, or even Latin America. As a consequence most Christians in the United States and Europe are unaware that presently the areas of greatest church growth and theological ferment are in the Third World, where two-thirds of humanity live today and where the majority of Christians will be living tomorrow. Asian Voices in Christian Theology is a compelling effort to restore the Church's vision and to heighten its awareness of the people of God in that vast and teeming region. Nine prominent Protestant theologians, each from a different country or area, speak of the challenges and opportunities presented to the Church as it is shaped by, and in turn attempts to shape, the dynamics of change in Asia. The value of these nine theological reflections is enhanced by credal statements of Asian churches and an extensive bibliography. Asian Voices in Christian Theology thus become a source-book as well as guide for those who wish to explore the new and vibrant theologies emerging in lands long neglected by Western Christianity. It is the strongest statement to date from Asia of what the Church must do and be as it struggles to become in fact what it has long been only in name - universal.
