Sri and Christ : A Study of the Indigenous Church in East Java
Outline: This is a sociological religious study of popular religion in East Java in Indonesia. SRI is the Spirit of Javanese rice cultivation, the power within the life of thousands of Javanese people. It is the encounter between SRI and Christ that Professor van Akkeren investigates. "In many ways the life of the churches of Indonesia" says the editor's introduction "presents special features of particular interest to those who study the growth of Christianity in Asia. This is partly due to their indigenous character, partly to their early dynamic towards Protestant unity, but especially to the remarkably open relationships which have been developed between Christianity and Islam in these varying Islands. All of these characteristics are illustrated in this analysis of the impact made by the Protestant faith on the rural society of East Java, and of the influence of this environment upon the understanding and experience of Indonesian village Christians."
