Messenger, The Message, The Community, The : Three Critical Issues for the Cross-Cultural Church-Planter
Outline: Most cross-cultural church-planting ministries face three critical issues. First, church planters must be accepted as valid messengers. They must be people with credibility that can speak clearly into their listeners' situation. Second, their message must be understandable. Muller explains that everyone has a worldview built from three basic building blocks found in Genesis 3: shame, guilt and fear. The Bible speaks clearly into all three types of worldview. Therefore, church-planters must understand their audience and share the gospel in ways that are meaningful. Sometimes church-planters can be accepted as valid messengers, but their message is not clear because they are not talking the cultural language of their listeners. Third, the gospel may still be rejected because the Christian community that is started is not seen as a viable or attractive community to the listeners. Since coming to Christ also includes joining a community of believers, church-planters must build attractive Christian communities for people from other worldviews. History has shown us that great movements of God have occurred when the three issues of Messenger, Message, and Community have all been addressed and the Holy Spirit is free to move and express Himself in all three areas. Roland Muller speaks as a practitioner to practitioners, illustrating his points with examples drawn from a wide variety of backgrounds.
