Wayang Golek : The Entrancing World of Classical Javanese Puppet Theatre
Outline: Since the early nineteenth century - the first report appears in Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles' A History of Java published in 1817 - foreigners have always been fascinated by Javanese puppet theatre or wayang. This book is concerned with one form of wayang - wayang golek - found exclusively in West Java or Sunda. Wayang golek is performed with three-dimensional wooden rod-puppets, and its repertoire of stories is taken from the great Indian epics, the Mahabharata and the Ramayana. After introducing the reader to the history of wayang in general and to its various forms, the author writes about the carving of wayang golek puppets and the features that contribute to variations in style, in particular the face and head-dress. Other chapters describe how the puppet drama is conducted and how it is structured, and synopses are provided of the Indian epics. Uniquely, the book includes a register of nearly 200 different wayang golek puppets, with their names and synonyms. Wayang Golek: The Entrancing World of Classical Javanese Puppet Theatre is the only work of reference on the subject available in English and as such will be welcomed by those interested in puppets in general and in Indonesian folk culture in particular. Superbly illustrated with 78 illustrations in full colour, 50 in black and white, and over 230 line drawings, it is doubtful if the book will be superseded, either in content or presentation, for a long time.
