Mission at the Crossroads: Indigenous Churches, European Missionaries, Islamic Association and Socio-Religious Change in Java 1812-1936
Outline: New problems as well as new possibilities emerge from left and right when Christianity was first introduced to central and East Java in the nineteenth century. Here Christianity met with Javanese tradition, Islamic influence and nationalistic movements. How did the Dutch missionaries cope with these problems and possibilities? This dissertation makes an in-depth study of this decisive period of the history of Christianity in Indonesia.
