Call of the Minaret, The
Outline: Christianity and Islam are today in closer contact than ever before, both in world affairs and in the field of religion. In the political area, the West and Communism compete for the favor of emergent Muslim nations. In the field of religion, the historic faith of the Western world confronts the dominant religion of the Middle East. Yet lack of understanding between the two faiths is widespread and could lead to tragic consequences for both. Here, based on the phrases of the call to prayer as given five times a day by the muezzin, is an attempt to present to the Christian world the main historical and doctrinal aspects of the Muslim faith, and to relate them to modern social and economic thought. The author, as a Christian scholar, does not minimize what is at stake between the two faiths, nor does he take refuge in facile notions of their identity. He does, however, attempt to examine and evaluate a new pattern in Muslim-Christian relations against a background of twentieth-century changes and tensions. Although the book is concerned with the history and theology of these two great religions, it is highly readable. Scholar and general reader alike will find Professor Cragg's book a key to an understanding of the religion and culture of the Middle East and Muslim Asia as they exist today.
