This book is intended for those wh o do not read Hebrew but have
to rely on a translation of the Bible. I have tried to put myself in
their position as much as possible, and whe n I started writing I was
fully resolved to refrain entirely from using information from the
original texts, or at least to limit references to the original text to
the utmost minimum. No w that the book is finished, however, I
find that I have not always succeeded in this aim. Occasionally
I have been forced to refer to the original language after all, in
order to keep my argument transparent, and because the poem
under consideration demanded it. Moreover, I have frequently
resorted to using my own translations.
