Introduction to Old Testament Theology: A Canonical Approach
Outline: The author's purpose in this book is to show how different approaches to the Old Testament can be brought together into single theology. The author confronts the issues through a series of questions that jusxtapose concepts often set in opposition to one another:
- Is the Bible a record of God's revelation or of human religion?
- How is the "Old" Testament normative if there is also a "New" Testament?
- Text or Event: Does God's revelation lie in the text of Scripture or in the events referred to in the text?
- Criticism or Canon: Do we take the Scripture at face value, or attempt to reconstruct them from an earlier form?
- Descriptive or Confessional: Is faith essential to understanding Scripture, or should we treat it like every other book from the past?
- Diachronic or Synchronic: Does Scripture consist of a series of ideas sequentially presented, or is there a central theme or themes?
