At his inauguration to the chair in The History of Systems of Thought’ at the Collegè de France in Paris in 1970 Michel Foucault commented on the difficulties, the responsibilities and the risks, associated with entering the world of discourse. I suspect most of us can understand Foucault’s preference, namely to be already within discourse, to be ‘borne way beyond all possible beginnings’, for beginning is never simple.
