Philosophy of Mathematics
There are a number of ways in which this book could fail. It has several goals, some of them pedagogical. One of these goals is to introduce readers to the philosophy of mathematics. In my attempt to avoid failure here I’ve included chapters on traditional points of view, such as formalism and constructivism, as well as Platonism. And since I’m aiming at a broad audience, I’ve taken pains to explain philosophical notions that many readers may encounter for the first time. I’ve also given lots of detailed mathematical examples for the sake of those who lack a technical background. It’s been my experience that there is a huge number of students who come to philosophy from a humanities back
ground wanting to know a bit about the sciences, and when they are properly introduced they find that their appetites for mathematics become insatiable. I’d be delighted to stimulate a few readers in this way.
