Predestination Biblical and Theological Paths
In a recent ecumenical study, the Wesleyan theologian Edgardo Colón-Emeric observes that ‘predestination cannot simply be treated as a historical artifact...but as an abiding structural element of a sound doctrine of Christian perfection’.1 By contrast, the American religious historian Peter Thuesen speaks for the majority of contemporary theologians when he warns that predestinarian controversies undermine Christian appreciation for sacramental grace, lead to sterile rationalism, and arise from ‘churchly traditions (or individual predilections) that have colored readings of the biblical text’.
