Word biblical commentary : Leviticus
The Masoretic Text of Leviticus is a highly reliable text. As a part of the Pentateuch, the first part of the Hebrew Scriptures to be accepted as authoritative, it has been carefully copied from an early period. The longest and oldest Hebrew text of Leviticus is l lQpaleoLev, which contains portions of Lev 22-27. It is a leather ms of Leviticus written in paleo-He-brew script. It is dated to around 100 B.C. Mathews (BA 50 [1987] 50) points out that its use of the paleo-Hebrew script along with some other features indicates that it was produced by a scribe who shared the interests of the Essenes. The best preserved portion is seven continuous columns, one being blank, that contain portions. Because in l lQpaleoLev there are fifteen unique readings that are inferior to MT, Mathews concludes that l lQpaleoLev is not a superior witness to Leviticus ( CBQ 48 [ 1986] 196-97) . Other mss of Leviticus among the Dead Sea Scrolls, including nine in Hebrew, a couple in Greek, and one Targum, have survived only in small fragments.
