Ready to Learn: What Parents Can Do to Help
Change is a very interesting phenomenon. Many of us have a love-hate relationship with it. As much as we like to see new things, like an old slipper, there’s something very comfortable about what we have been doing. In this book I may be pushing you to a place that’s new and possibly uncomfortable. I’ll be presenting a different way of looking at children’s problems and your role in helping them. Although I’m a professional, I’m also the parent of two children who are now young adults. As a parent, I’ve watched our role become marginalized. “Professionals know best”—the unsaid mantra many parents believe—is touted by those whose status it affirms. Having stood on both sides of the parent-professional wall for over 25 years, my view is a little different. I believe with knowledge, “parents know best.”
