Communicative versus Strategic Rationality: Habermas Theory of Communicative Action and the Social Brain
The theory of communicative rationality by Jurgen Habermas is a contemporary philosophical approach to practical reasoning. Habermas’ communication theory differentiates between two kinds of rationality, the emancipative communicative reasoning and the strategic or instrumental thinking. Hence, social action can be either success oriented strategic action or understanding-oriented communicative action. Strategic action is purposive-rational action oriented towards other persons from a utilitarian point of view, for example calculative manipulation of others.
