Trusting God : Even when life hurts
Outline: Because obeying God makes sense to us. In most cases His laws appear reasonable and wise, and even when we don't want to obey them, we usually concede that they are good for us. But the circumstances we often find ourselves in defy explanation. When unexpected situations arise that appear unjust, irrational, or even dreadful, we feel confused and frustrated. And before long we begin to doubt God's concern for us or His control over our lives. Adversity is hard to endure, and can be harder to understand. Even when we know God is in control it's difficult to trust Him. Why would He allow a tragic auto accident or a crucial job loss? How could He permit cancer in a loved us or the death of a child? Grappling with His concern for us we asl, "Whey is God allowing this?" or "What have I done wrong?" In an effort to strengthen his own trust in God during a time of adversity, Jerry Bridges began a lengthy Bible study on the topic of God's sovereignty. What he learned changed his life, and he now shares the fruit of that study with you in Trusting God. As you begin to explore the scope of God's power over nations, nature and the detailed lives of individuals, you'll begin to acknowledge His loving control. And as you come to know Him better, you'll find yourself trusting Him more completely. Even when life hurts.
IN GOD WE (SOMETIMES) TRUST.
Do you find it easy to trust God-until adversity strikes? When life clouds over, do you suddenly begin to second-guess your faith and suspect that you only imagined His care for you? In Trusting God, Jerry Bridges uncovers three essential truths about God-truths we must believe if we are to trust Him in adversity. They are:
- God is completely sovereign.
- God is infinite in wisdom.
- God is perfect in love.
"In order to trust God," writes Bridges, "we must always view our adverse circum- stances through the eyes of faith, not of sense. When we seek Him in the midst of personal pain and discover Him to be trust- worthy, we'll find ourselves in a deeper, more intimate relationship with Him as a result."
We are not at the mercy of circum- stances. Although God's ways of working in our lives are frequently beyond explanation, we must learn to trust Him. Even when we don't understand. Years of biblical study on the subject combined with lessons learned from per sonal experience make Jerry Bridges' approach both warm and insightful. He understands the despair that comes from seeing your world crumble, and he delivers an uplifting challenge to trust in God, who alone will lovingly carry you through.
