Persons Divine and Human
Outline: The understanding of personhood is one of the central issues of debate in many academic disciplines as well as in society at large. This collection of specially commissioned essays provides a modern theological exploration. Against a background of the renaissance of trinitarian thought, the authors explore the interrelationship between divine personhood, as it is expressed in the doctrine of the Trinity, and human personhood. The contributors include: an introductory enquiry into the foundations of theological thinking on the understanding of the person; John Zizioulas outlines an ontology of personhood guided by the trinitarian categories of the Cappadocian Fathers; Colin Gunton presents the implications of faith in God as Trinity for the understanding for the understanding of the image of God in human persons; and four historical studies by Brian Horne, Alan Spence, Graham MacFarlane and John Aves investigate the anthropological, christological and philosophical dimensions of the personal. The concluding theses by Christoph Schwobel attempt to sketch a systematic framework for Christian anthropology based on the understanding of human being as relational being. These essays - the first published under the aegis of the Research Institute in Systematic Theology - indicate the contribution trinitarian theology at King's College can make in the dialogue on the nature of personhood.
