Elisha—The Successor of Elijah (2 Rings ii. 1=18)
THE narrative opens with an introductory clause which anticipates one of the main incidents that are to be related. The events in question took place 'when the Lord took Elijah by a whirlwind up into heaven.' This clause cannot be meant to indicate the climax of the narrative, for no skilful story- teller would thus reveal his secret at the very start, and that too in a subordinate clause! And there- fore it is misleading to entitle the incident related in these verses 'the translation of Elijah.' The real culminating point of the story has to be gathered from what follows.
