Reformed Historical Theology : Volume 61 : Reformed Evangelicalism and the Search for a Usable Past : The Historiography of Arnold Dallimore, Pastor-Historian
Outline: How can a Christian historian be faithful to the discipline of history as well as their own religious commitments? Arnold Dallimore, a Canadian church-historian, wrote an extensive two-volume biography of George Whitefield, among others, in which he exemplifies a theology-oriented historiographical approach. Ian Hugh Clary's study examines Dallimore's historiography focusing on questions of objectivity, the opposition between providential and academic history, and the nature of history as a profession. Instead, focusing on just the historical method, Clary specifically examines the writings of one historian in particular so as to gain a greater insight into the nature of church history.
