Confessing the Church : Explorations in Constructive Dogmatics
Outline: An exploration of the church. What is the church? What is its nature as a community gathered around the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth and his immediate disciples? How is it related to other topics of Christian dogmatics, such as the Trinity or redemption? How should we think and speak about the church today? The 2023-Los Angeles Theology Conference examined these and other questions related to ecclesiology, the doctrine of the church. Throughout its history, the church has had to clarify its understanding of itself, seek unity in the midst of sometimes great discord, respond to criticisms from outside its walls, and preserve the faith within. Such issuers are perhaps even more pressing today. The essays gathered together in this volume represent the contributions of a variety of theologians, who collectively offer constructive proposals for understanding and confessing the doctrine of the church with historical depth, ecumenical scope, and analytic clarity. These diverse and robust voices can help the church in its ongoing task of declaring the praises of God, who called people out of darkness and into the light of Christ.
