Works of John Owen, The : Volume 1 : The Glory of Christ
Outline : In volume 1 of this reprint of his works, edited by W. H. Goold, Andrew Thomson's excellent biography sympathetically traces his life and experience from his birth at Standhampton, through his pastoral ministries in Fordham and Coggeshall, his years of public service as chaplain to Cromwell and vice chancellor of Oxford University, until his last days as a preacher and pastor in London. Included in this volume in his work on The Person of Christ, 'A work', according to Dr M'Crie, 'which together with its continuation, the Meditations on the Glory of Christ, of all the theological works published by individuals since the Reformation, next to Calvin's Institutes, we should have deemed it our highest honour to have produced' The application of this great work includes a valuable section on 'How to recover from spiritual decay and grow in grace.' The volume concludes with two examples of Owen's intense pastoral concern, in the form of Two Short Catechisms, designed to help and instruct the members of his congregation at Fordham. According to Owen himself, they represent the substance of the teaching he gave in his regular preaching ministry. They, like the other sections of this fine volume, more than repay careful study.
