Life in the Son : Exploring Participation and Union with Christ in John's Gospel and Letters
Outline : 'I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly' (John 10:10). From beginning to end, Scripture traces God's redemption story as he works to establish his fellowship and glorious presence with humanity. Throughout church history, fellowship with God has often been understood in terms of communion with God and union with Christ. This union is both already and not yet, echoing the movement from death to life that baptism represents. But what does this life look like? What are its dynamics? Jesus' invitation to life lies at the heart of the gospel and is a theme that is particularly present in the Johannine corpus. In the fourth Gospel, Jesus shows his disciples the beauty and loving intimacy of "in-one-another" relationship with him. In 1 John, fellowship with God and lasting, mutual "in-one-another" relationship with God lie at the heart of the letter's message.
