History of Aesthetic from the Greeks to the 20th century, A
Outline : The history of aesthetic theory in the West has been long and varied but as in the general history of philosophic doctrines, a continuity of development may be described. Bernard Bosanquet, himself a distinguished philosopher and aesthetician traces the history of aesthetic doctrine in the classic tradition (the pre-Socratics; Plato, Aristotle, and the Hellenistic world); through the Middle Ages and Renaissance to the beginnings of modern philosophy (St. Thomas Aquinas and Descartes). It is in the modern period, however, that his treatment becomes most intense and comprehensive, exploring as he does the contributions of classical philology, the revival of archeology, the function of art-criticism in Corneille, Fontenelle, Burke, Hogarth, and Reynolds; Lessing and Winckelmann: Schiller and Goethe; and the idealist tradition that begins with Kant and is continued by Schelling and Hegel A HISTORY OF AESTHETIC is carried up the end of the 19th century with Bosanquet's discussion of the tradition of objective idealism.
