Truth Shall Make You Free, The : Confrontations
Outline : Building on his classic A Theology of Liberation, the world's preeminent liberation theologian addresses some of the challenges that have been raised against this "new way of doing theology" and charts its prospects for the future. Part I of the Truth Shall Make You Free consists of Gutierrez's defense of his work before the theological faculty of the Catholic Institute of Lyons. The panel's questions and Gutierrez's responses provide a clear illustration of the convergences and tensions between the theology of liberation and traditional European theology. In Part II, Gutierrez explores the role of the social sciences and its methodologies in theology, making a substantial statement about one of the criticisms raised most often against liberation theologians. Finally, Gutierrez addresses himself to the points raised by the two Vaticans instructions, "Instruction on Certain Aspects of the Theology of Liberation" and "Christian Freedom and Liberation." This milestone essay traces the history of the concepts of theory and praxis, of truth, of faith and works, of human freedom and solidarity, and the continuity of all these ideas in the church, in the theology of liberation, and in the world. Lucid and cogent, The Truth Shall Make You Free brings to the forefront liberation theology's answers to its critics, refining the terms of discussion and opening the way for further dialogue, moving the discussion and debate to the next higher plane.
