Religious Diversity
Outline : This book is a basic introduction to the thought of one of the world's outstanding religious figures. Carefully chosen both for accessibility and as an overview of Wilfred Cantwell Smith's thinking, these nine selections on world religions move gracefully through a wide range of concerns.
Part One, Religious Diversity and Truth, highlights the continuing tension between the poles of religious pluralism on the one hand and the overarching truth to which religions point on the other. Next, Religious Diversity and Modernity focuses on the subject of change in religion, particularly at the present moment. What is the nature of tradition in relation to faith? Where are the roots and what is the future of today's cosmopolitan attitude towards religious diversity? The direction to be hoped for in the future is one of Religious Diversity and Mutual Understanding, the concluding group of Smith's writings. Smith proposes that externalism in the study of religions not be justified in the pursuit of a chimerical objectivity. but argues for a study that takes into account the full complexity of human beings.
