Commentary
EEC : 1, 2, & 3 John
Outline : From the Introduction
Eternal life - its significance, source, and enjoyment - stands as the principal focus of 1 John. Beginning with the prologue in which eternal life is a Person rather than an experience, the contingencies of experiencing it through a healthy relationship with Christ are then detailed through the body of the epistle. ... It cannot be experienced apart from honesty with God about sin, obedience to his command to love one another, and orthodox beliefs about Jesus. Eternal life cannot be enjoyed by a believer apart from God's truth and can only be enjoyed on God's term. Finally, its experience flows from a confidence in one's standing with God, both in terms of one's assurance of salvation as well as acceptance into his presence through prayer.
In this volume of the Evangelical Exegetical Commentary, Gary W. Derickson shows how John's epistles provide encouragement for believers and warn against the rise of false teachers. Being careful to avoid speculative theories, Derickson focuses on John's pastoral concerns. He examines the Greek text in detail, interacting with the most recent scholarship, and he presents the message of these epistles for the benefit of believers everywhere.
