Outline : In this well-known work, Etienne Gilson undertakes a sufficiently difficult task, namely, to define the spirit of mediæval philosophy. He focuses on and supports his conclusion that the Middle Ages produced, besides a Christian literature and art as everyone admits, this very Christian philosophy, which is a matter of dispute.\\r\\nGilson answers the true questions: first, whether we can form the concept of a Christian philosophy, and second, whether mediæval philosophy is not precisely its most adequate historical expression. He maintains that the spirit of mediæval philosophy is the spirit of Christianity pene-trating the Greek tradition, working within it, drawing out of it a certain view of the world that is specifically Christian. To support his hypothesis, Gilson examines mediæval thought in its nascent state, at that precise point where the Judeo-Christian graft was inserted into the Hellenic tradi-tion. Gilson\\\'s demonstration is purely historical and occa-sionally theoretical in suggesting how doctrines that satis-fied our predecessors for so many centuries may still be found conceivable today.
